“Gemma sings with a delicate command’-
ALL ABOUT JAZZ
Gemma hails from a small country town in the Australian outback, but she brings a well traveled global set of influences and experiences to her performances.
The now U.S. based soul-jazz singer, songwriter & saxophonist has released a number of house music records over the last 4 years with various European music producers. In December last year she released her debut studio jazz album “Songs I Love". Recorded in England with award winning New-Zealand sound engineer Clint Murphy, this album was a perfect introduction to make Sherry’s mark in the jazz world. In May 2020, Gemma released an E.P of Bossa Nova songs to popular praise.
Gemma began developing her unique style and vibe in the remote outback of Australia at jam sessions with jazz veterans. She did plenty of session work down under and studied Classical music before deciding to move to New York City to further study vocal improvisation and pursue a career in music.
Gemma is set to release the album in December. The inspiration for this album came from her wanting to cheer people up during the pandemic. Gemma believes “the world needs happy music” and that music is a universal language that everyone can enjoy and understand.
Gemma Sherry's third full length album, the ironically titled ‘Let's Get Serious’ is a collection of joyful songs recorded specifically to bring a smile to the listener. Faced with the live music landscape of 2020 which put an unscheduled end to her 2019-2020 debut world tour, Gemma decided that rather than retreating she would re-double her efforts and record an album of what the world needed most; happy, playful, cheeky music.
Her inspiration has come from vocalists such as N’Dea Davenport, Incognito, The Brand New Heavies, N’dambi, and Blossom Dearie—and jazz sax influences including Charlie Parker, Cannonball Adderly and Art Pepper—her voice is described as a mix of Astrud Gilberto, Peggy Lee, Norah Jones and Amel Larrieux.
